![]() ![]() You have to experiment with the “tooth” and “roughness / smoothness” of each type of paper to see if it suits your style of drawing and the types of drawing media you are using. Personally, I usually tend to stick with drawing papers myself, I have used everything from Bristol to a charcoal paper to some really nice 100% cotton papers…. My dad is an architect– he only uses very hard leads on vellum to do drafting– softer leads tend to smear too much and just cause the paper to be very dirty in the end.) It is usually better suited for tracing or drafting, and for using pen and ink… I think it has to do with the fibers not really catching the graphite and allowing it to sink into the paper (some vellum can be almost “plastic” in texture). When it comes to choosing a brand of Bristol paper, Strathmore Bristol paper comes out at the top. Mediums like graphite will adhere well to the texture. Vellum can be very slick and unpredictable because of the surface. The textured Bristol paper, known as vellum, is a good choice if you are working with oil, pastels, crayons, pencils, or graphite, and charcoal. ![]() Should I just try using a different kind of paper? What do you reccomend for graphite? Drawings mostly come out looking very coarse, And when i try to blend by using a tissue, Light areas become very blurry, and almost look like gray watercolor, while dark areas get even more coarse. I just got vellum papaer for christmas.but i’m having a very hard time when I try to use graphite on it. ![]()
